Wink  Recently, there have been several people saying they have had their "explorer.exe" file hacked. What does that mean? Well, the explorer.exe file is what makes your entire desktop, including your icons and the Start menu, appear. So, if your desktop isn't loading up right, listen to me when I tell you not to panic too much. You may think that all of your data has been lost, but it's actually fairly easy to restore your explorer.exe file. That is, if you know how. And that's exactly what I’ll be showing you today!

1.) First of all, you need to make sure that a damaged explorer.exe file is the actual cause of your problem. You can tell if your explorer.exe file has been damaged if you can still log on to your computer, but, as I said before, you don't see your Start menu or any of your icons, etc.

2.) After you have verified that your explorer.exe file is the source of the problem, simply turn on your computer and let it boot up.

3.) You should then be able to log in to your account.

But remember, after you log in, you won’t see your taskbar, icons or anything besides your wallpaper, like this:

4.) Click Ctrl + R, which will make the Run dialogue box appear (or you can go to Start, Run).

5.) Next, type in “%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe” ( without the quotes) and then press OK.

6.) In a short moment, the System Restore window should appear. You’re probably familiar with the wizard for this, but I’ll walk you through it, just in case.

7.) Select the option that says "Restore this computer to an earlier point in time" and then click Next.

8.) Now, select a restore point. Make sure you choose a time before your computer started acting strange. If your last decent restore point was a month or two ago, don’t worry. The System Restore feature only restores system files and settings, so your documents are safe.

9.) Select the day you want and then click Next.

Your computer will then restart itself and when it loads back up, everything should be back to normal on your desktop. You can now take a sigh of relief, because you know you and your computer are just fine!

For people who don't want to spend money on a security suite, here is my recommendation:

Anti Virus - AVG

Firewall - Comodo

Anti-spyware: Ad-aware

I would like to see what other people use. There are a lot of other products, but I use the above three and I haven't had any security breaches so far, thanks god.

P.S. Thanks for starting this thread sexyevil.

If you download a lot from the internet, I would recommend trying out Free Download Manager as it automatically links to Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. I just love this utility and use it a lot. It can resume downloads, and can even accelerate some downloads to almost 4-5 times faster.

Download it from here.

A cool tip to manage your computer's shutdown process automatically. You can set your computer to shutting down at any convenient time. A simple shutdown command will set your computer to close all running applications and shutdown properly after a predefined time. This tip is very useful to save energy and time. After the execution of this command, a small window will appear to count the time of system shutdown. You can cancel this auto shutdown process using same command.

Follow the given steps to auto-shutdown your computer:

  • Click on start and then go to Run.
  • Type shutdown.exe -s -t yyyy then click OK.
Here yyyy means time in seconds, for example if you want your computer to shutdown automatically after 5 minutes then the command will be shutdown -s -t 300.

Thanks for that but I want to ask about saving a computer from auto shutdown. I think it is something called worm blaster. I always change my computers time to another year so it give me that much time. Is there a way to get rid of that other than re-installing windows?

Thanks for excellent tips to keep computer safe and sound . I have a question to ask here by installing anti virus and anti spyware why the speed of the computer slows down a bit .

Some time when the system hanged I use to restart it physically and this way a lot od time goes wasted . Now after know about explorer.exe I can save a lot of time . This way computer starts in seconds . Thanks for useful tips .
